Issues facing the UK Road Haulage industry are constantly brought to light by government and industry reports as well as business leaders expressing their views in the national and trade media. Recent issues include financial performance, regulation, competition and the shortage of skills. An over-supply of national operators, competition from foreign hauliers, high operational costs (e.g. fuel), regulation, congestion, low sector appeal to employees and an increasingly educated freight transport buying community have been identified as reasons for poor industry performance.

More recently, industry attention has been focussed on tackling skills shortages, especially for qualified HGV drivers. Recent industry surveys demonstrated that 72% of the UK 's 100 largest companies experienced driver shortages. Sustainable recruitment strategies that can assist in attracting, retaining and planning succession for HGV drivers will be a priority for companies to develop within their businesses. Simulation training technology may become an important tool to assist companies establish comprehensive driver development programmes that will secure the industry an optimised and skilled driver workforce.
