Assessment provides the opportunity to validate new entrants to a company whether on permanent or temporary contract. It should be the foundation of the development of all professional drivers including regular reviews to determine what further skills a driver requires. Assessments have for instance, determined that drivers may simply require a new pair of glasses or more fundamental driver skills. In the majority of cases, however, it simply detects where habits or improved skills would contribute to fleet costs or road safety.
Some drivers may complete a whole career without undergoing a single assessment. Increasingly, professional companies are committing resources to evaluate both the risk and opportunities delivered by their drivers. This is often identified within fuel efficiency programmes or by companies that require specialist skills such as those transporting hazardous or perishable cargoes.
Simulators can support assessment programmes, they provide the opportunity to validate the responses of drivers whatever their experience time after time. They also let drivers practice responses to dangerous scenarios without risk to that driver, his truck or to the general public.
