UK Truck Driver Training Simulator
As part of a project for the Road Haulage Modernisation
Fund, TRL is developing a UK specific full mission truck simulator.
Industry consultation previously undertaken by TRL demonstrated that there was a need for a truck simulator that could deliver tangible benefits to operators in terms of safety and efficiency. The simulator supports the objectives of both industry and government to take full advantage of new technologies to assist in the ongoing modernisation of the haulage industry. The unit will be used to validate the opportunities provided by simulation to deliver training to commercial vehicle drivers. Simulators, more normally associated with sophisticated pilot training, are increasingly being applied in the global trucking community. Truck simulation technologies have been widely adopted in Europe and North America . Simulators provide significant opportunities to meet driver-training objectives. The pragmatic benefits to be anticipated from introducing simulators into training strategies will be a key focus of the research programme.
Simulation can provide a complementary tool that can be combined with traditional methods of driver training and development.
