How realistic is the Driving Experience?

The simulator is designed to provide a realistic driving experience. The Full Mission simulator at TRL is mounted on a "spider" motion system, which gives the whole simulator cab, screen and projection equipment synchronised movement through 6 degrees of freedom. This enables the vehicle to pitch and heave (replicating heavy acceleration and braking) or roll, surge and sway (simulating load movements). It will also reproduce the "feel" of bends, different road surfaces and potholes. Force feedback from the vehicle controls, combined with sophisticated audio reproduction ensure that sitting in the cab is remarkably close to the real life experience. Finally, the external factors, weather, traffic and scenery, all help to create the participants' impressions of driving a real vehicle.
