First Phase Results
620 qualified C and C+E drivers participated in the first
phase of the TRUCKSIM research programme running between November 2003
and March 2004. A diverse range of freight transport and logistics operations
were represented by drivers from large multinationals through to owner
operators. The limiting factor for all drivers was the amount of time
available to them on the system, which was ultimately predicated by expiration
of the RHMF (Road Haulage Modernisation Fund) scheme in March 2004. TRL
was suitably impressed by the professional and mature approach adopted
by the vast majority of drivers and companies involved in the study.
TRL's research is still only at the beginning of understanding how simulation
technology works, how it can be best applied and ultimately exploited.
Clearly, this essential first step would not have been possible without
the commitment of companies sending drivers to TRL. Feedback has been
tremendous. A wide range of objective and candid views were received and
are being reviewed to establish the best way forward in improving both
the system and the training modules which will be eventually delivered
by such systems. With both the Working Time and Training Directives likely
to place additional burdens on companies recruiting, retaining and training
their drivers, the development of synthetic training tools, such as TRUCKSIM,
will be essential in providing appropriate, effective training solutions
to assist the industry.
